The Bolton Bulls wheelchair basketball club provides wheelchair basketball to people of all ages, disabilities and gender from all over the North West of England including Bolton, Bury, Blackburn, Wigan and Stockport.
Final game of the season for Bolton Bulls Wheelchair Basketball Club and they were hoping to end a tough season with a win. It wouldn’t be easy; their opponents, Sheffield Steelers 3 were going into the game as league winners having only lost 1 game so far.
Starting 5 for Bolton Bulls: Darren Birch, Andy Golightly, Tom Eckersley, Dale Speight and Graeme Lambert.
Bolton Bulls set out to put the game to bed early using a high line defence and pressing their opponents and forcing mistakes to get turnovers. It paid off, and in the first quarter they raced into a commanding lead, with Graeme Lambert scoring 5 out of 6 first quarter baskets. Tom Eckersley rounded out the scoring for Bolton. Strong defence from Bulls restricted league champions Sheffield to only 4 points.
Second quarter Graeme Lambert kept up his hot scoring streak scoring another four baskets. Andy Golightly and Darren Birch also added points as Bolton Bulls added another 12 points, doubling their score. Continued pressing once again restricted Sheffield to only 2 baskets in the quarter.
Half time score: Bolton Bulls - 24, Sheffield Steelers 3 - 8
Sheffield Steelers 3 came out in the second half looking to reduce the deficit, Bolton Bulls kept up the pressure which led to both teams scoring well in the third quarter. Sheffield Steelers improved on their poor scoring in the first half adding a total of 10 points to their score; while for Bolton Bulls Andy Golightly and Michael Galligan opened the second half scoring before Graeme Lambert continued to be the hot hand adding another 3 baskets to an ever increasing points haul. Andy Golightly followed that with two more baskets and Tom Eckersley closed out the 3rd quarter scoring; Bulls adding 16 points to their tally.
Going into to the 4th quarter Bolton Bulls were confident of closing out the game and grabbing a much needed win. Bulls however were tiring after putting in a exceptional performance against the league leaders. Sheffield outscored Bolton in the final quarter, but Bulls kept there score ticking with Graeme Lambert adding 3 baskets from open play and a single point from the free throw line. Andy Golightly also added a single from line.
An excellent performance from Bolton Bulls got them a well deserved win.
